BOOKS ABOUT NOTTINGHAM
by Graham Woodward
I have been photographing Nottingham for over 40 years, and have now used some
of my 10,000 photographs to produce a series of books about parts of the city.

Nottingham Then and Now
ISBN 9-781739-540340

32 pages with 69 high quality images, mostly in colour

There is an old saying that the only constant is change. The poet Hilaire Belloc once wrote, ”When science has discovered something more, we shall be happier than we were before”. Most people dislike change and let nostalgia stand in the way of progress. The key is to maintain a balance between our heritage and modern needs, and it is sometimes a good idea to look back and remind ourselves how good, or bad, the past really was. This book looks at some of the buildings of Nottingham that have been demolished or changed dramatically over the last 40 years and shows their replacements. You can then decide if Belloc’s view applies to architecture!

Meadows Book

The Meadows, Nottingham
ISBN 9-781739-540333

One-hundred pages with over 210 high quality images mostly in colour.

This book looks in detail at the development of The Meadows. In fifty years (1850-1900) it went from an idyllic rural pasture or meadow, covered in crocuses and grazed by sheep and cattle, to an overcrowded Victorian suburb prone to flooding on an exceptional scale. The book looks at the history of the area’s development, the buildings, and the streets. The area was extensively redeveloped in the 1970s which means that 50 years later many of the current residents may have little or no idea of what it was like before. This book tries to fill that gap.
